The Kansas City Chiefs still need a starting left tackle as they approach the 2024 NFL Draft on April 25.
Though second-year offensive tackle Wanya Morris may theoretically start at LT for the team next season, it would be preferable for him to continue developing in a backup role while also serving as a critical emergency option if the offensive line suffers injuries.
So, finding a franchise left tackle in this year’s very outstanding offensive lineman selection class will most likely be at or near the top of general manager Brett Veach’s priority list for the three-day event.
However, with the team’s cap space about to increase after moving cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton feels the Chiefs could explore trading for one player to satisfy one of their major needs:
Cam Robinson, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive tackle.
“The 28-year-old has missed games because of injuries and a suspension, but he’s a solid plug-in play option if Kansas City wants a proven starter,” Moton wrote on the day of the game.
Moton also discussed what he believes the Jaguars may get for Robinson in a trade if they opt to replace him internally.
“Jacksonville could look to Walker Little to take over at left tackle, which could make Robinson expendable and available for a middle-round pick.”
Cam Robinson is a Quality Starter That Went Through a Recent Rough Patch
Robinson, who was picked by the Jaguars in the second round (34th overall) in 2017, has been a fine starting-caliber player when healthy and in the lineup.
Robinson allowed 20 sacks in five seasons as Jacksonville’s full-time starter. However, injuries (he missed 32 regular season games during his NFL career) and off-the-field antics have Moton and others wondering if the 28-year-old Robinson’s tenure in Jacksonville may end sooner rather than later.
Robinson is in the final year of a three-year, $54 million contract with the Jaguars. According to Over The Cap, his salary cap hit is $21.9 million.
According to Spotrac, Robinson has earned $51.9 million throughout his seven-year NFL career.
Would Trade for Cam Robinson Be Worth it for Chiefs?
If the Chiefs can get Robinson for a mid-round pick, regardless of what that pick is, they should be interested.
The two-time defending Super Bowl winners may solve one of their most pressing issues by giving up a Day 2 or Day 3 choice. Giving up that kind of draft capital for a known product is more important to the team than taking a risk on a new prospect.
If Kansas City chose to, it could also extend Robinson’s deal, lowering his huge 2024 cap charge. At that time, the Chiefs would still have money to spend on additional moves or to carry over into the 2025 offseason.
The Chiefs presently have $6.5 million in cap space, according to OTC. Once Sneed officially joins the Titans and his $19.8 million salary hit is removed from Kansas City’s books, the Chiefs will have $26.3 million in cap space, the ninth-highest in the NFL.
