After experiencing the Champions League this season, Newcastle United will want to return as soon as possible.
It will not happen next season, as Newcastle United have little chance of qualifying on this occasion. European football remains a possibility, but it will not be UEFA’s top league.
However, the Magpies will hope they can return to the promised land, particularly if they can avoid serious injuries to key players and strengthen their team during the transfer season.
Newcastle are clearly looking to splurge this summer, with plans to acquire a centre-back, winger, striker, and left-back.
How excellent they all are may depend on how much money the Magpies can spend, which will be determined by the Premier League’s profit and sustainability standards.
But if Eddie Howe can add three or four top-tier players to his team, Toon veteran Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United can return to the top four. But if they can’t, he doesn’t believe it’ll be doable.
Alan Shearer says Newcastle need three or four top level signings this summer
During a Q&A with The Athletic, Shearer was asked about his expectations for Newcastle United next season.
“I think that’s very, very difficult to answer,” he said.
For starters, will the profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) alter this summer, and if so, will Newcastle be able to spend?
“If Newcastle cannot spend, I do not believe they will be able to finish in the top four. It all depends on how much money they have available to spend. There’s no doubt that they need to add three or four high-quality players in order to compete for a spot in the top four next season.
“At this point, I don’t know if they’ll be able to do it. Will they have to sell players to accomplish this, and if so, who?
What should be Newcastle’s priority this summer
It is tough to determine which position Newcastle should prioritise. There are numerous concerns inside the squad, but it all depends on whether or not the club needs to sell before purchasing. For example, if Bruno Guimaraes is sold, finding a replacement must be the top priority.
But many supporters will point to the attack. While Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon are exceptional players, there is no one on the right who can compete with them.
A centre-back must also be high on the priority list, as we will eventually need to replace the aging Fabian Schar. Following Sven Botman’s injury, there is also an increased need for a centre-back.
However, a left-back may be the most important prerequisite in defense, especially given Dan Burn’s struggles there this season. In an ideal world, Lewis Hall would play there, since his loan agreement is due to become permanent for £28 million. Given how little he has played in his rookie season, it would be a huge surprise if he starts there on a regular basis next season.
Newcastle United will have a very difficult summer, with many spinning plates. Hopefully, it results in a group capable of fighting for the top four once more, but Shearer believes that will not happen unless three or four new faces arrive at St James’ Park.
