The Football Association has charged Sandro Tonali with breaking betting rules while playing for Newcastle United.
Sandro Tonali, a Newcastle United midfielder, has received a new punishment for breaking betting rules.
Tonali is now serving a 10-month suspension from football imposed by the Italian Football Federation for betting violations committed during his time with AC Milan. Tonali is accused of breaking FA rules 50 times after his £52 million signing to Newcastle in the summer of 2023 by betting on football events between August 12 and October 12, 2023.
The FA issued the following statement: “Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in respect to alleged violations of The FA’s Betting Rules.
“It is alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder broke FA Rule E8 50 times by betting on football events between August 12 and October 12, 2023. Sandro Tonali has until April 5, 2024 to answer.
Tonali has made only 12 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club, and his current suspension lasts until August 27, 2024. While the FA’s additional charges may result in further punishment for the Italian, any ban issued will most certainly be served concurrently and would not extend the official August 27 return date.
As a result, Newcastle may see Tonali return to action in the first few weeks of the 2024-25 season.
Following Tonali’s FA accusation, the club issued an official statement saying, “Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.”
“Sandro continues to fully cooperate with all relevant inquiries, and he has the club’s complete support. Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to provide any further comments at this time due to the current procedure.”
