‘Wouldn’t surprise me’: EFL pundit tips ‘fantastic’ coach to join Sunderland

Carlton Palmer has predicted the future of Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Danny Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in October with no management experience, despite spending years on the coaching staffs of RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national side.

After working with Ralph Hassenhuttl and Hansi Flick, the 34-year-old brought his knowledge to Hillsborough, which has worked out well thus far.

Sheffield Wednesday appeared destined for relegation after only three months of the season, but Rohl has radically altered the club, and they now sit 13th in the table.

Unfortunately for them, the season began in August, and they are currently one point from safety.

While Rohl’s primary emphasis is on keeping the Owls alive, he will have observed the mounting speculation about his future.

A number of English and German clubs are anticipated to bid for Rohl’s services, with Sunderland being one of the most recent to do so.

The Black Cats have had a disappointing season and are desperate to appoint a new permanent manager, with Michael Beale’s appointment in December proving disastrous.

The Wearside outfit has previously been widely associated with Will Still, but it appears that they are also exploring a move for Rohl.

It is unknown where his future lies, and it may depend on whether they are relegated, but commentator Carlton Palmer believes he would quit Yorkshire even if he keeps them up.

Palmer told Football League World: Palmer told FLW, “I’ve mentioned it several times, Danny Röhl has done an excellent job since arriving in Wednesday. I believe he will keep them up. He has galvanised the club, he has the players playing for him, and I am confident that he will keep them going.

I assumed they were dead and buried, and he did an excellent job.

“Röhl has already spoken about the elements that need to be put in place to carry the club ahead, such as the training ground, dressing room, and Hillsborough. If these things are put in place and he is not given the tools to build the side in the way he desires, I believe he and his backroom staff will be highly valued and sought after.

“If they want to keep him, he’ll need the owner’s support, and I’ve already heard one or two rumblings about that. So it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Röhl continued Wednesday and then moved on to fresh pastures.”

Are we currently attractive enough for Danny Rohl?

If Danny Rohl maintains Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship status, Sunderland will undoubtedly face increased opposition.

The coach sees a lot of potential in the Owls group and already has a good relationship with the fans, so he may want to stay there rather than join us, who appear to be in rapid decline for months.

Rohl certainly appears to be an appealing option, and his relationship with the players is something we needed with Beale, while he also fits the concept.

I’d be okay with either Still or Rohl in the summer, but what I really hope is that we’ve already made progress toward selecting our number one goal soon after the season ends, so we don’t waste time trying to bring someone in and then they miss half of pre-season.
