This will be the 36-year-old’s fourth game in charge of the Magpies this season. Jones also oversaw the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester City in August, when five United players were booked, and the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory at Manchester United in November, when Joelinton and Joe Willock were both booked, as were four of the hosts’ players at Old Trafford.

He was then in the middle when United defeated the Red Devils in the league a month later, with Joelinton receiving another caution, while Jones – who has been a top flight official since midway through the 2019/20 season – has also stepped up to referee continental fixtures, including games in the Europa Conference League and international friendlies.

Jones has issued four red cards in his 28 appearances this season, compared to only one in 2022/23 and 2021/22. He oversaw three Newcastle games in 2022/23, all of which were won by Eddie Howe’s team.
