Breaking news: 30-year-old star returns to Newcastle United

The Newcastle United playmaker was set to win his 51st cap for his country in Moscow.

Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron has returned to Tyneside after Paraguay’s friendly with Russia in Moscow was canceled.

The game at Dynamo Moscow’s stadium was scheduled for Monday night, but it was promptly postponed after 137 people were killed in a terrorist assault.

The Russian Football Union issued a statement saying: “In connection with the terrorist attack that occurred in Krasnogorsk, the Russian Football Union and the Paraguayan Football Association decided to cancel a friendly match between the national teams of Russia and Paraguay.”

Alexander Dyukov, head of the Russian Football Union, said: “In the current situation, together with our colleagues from Paraguay, we have decided not to hold a match between our teams and will organise it at a later date.” Russia is still barred from participating in FIFA and UEFA championships while at war with Ukraine, but it is permitted to play friendly games, which is why the meeting with Almiron’s team has been scheduled.

Almiron will now join his Newcastle teammates, as the Toon squad begins to return to full strength following a limited pool of players flying out to Dubai last week. However, Eddie Howe expects to have the majority of his side recovered by Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s noon game against West Ham United at St James’ Park.

Almiron was set to start the game in Moscow and was hoping to earn his 51st cap for his country.
