Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon made his England debut against Brazil yesterday night, much to Alan Shearer’s pleasure.
Gordon performed admirably in his debut for Gareth Southgate’s side, despite a dismal defeat against the South American team.
The winger rushed to Instagram to celebrate his debut, prompting reactions from both his Newcastle colleagues and club veteran Shearer, who was in the stands watching the game.
Shearer celebrates Gordonβs England debut
It wasn’t the ideal night for Gordon, who would have preferred to finish his England debut with a goal and a win, but it was a promising start for his Three Lions career.
After a terrific season in the Premier League for Newcastle, few thought this call-up was unwarranted, and now it’s a case of claiming that left-wing berth ahead of the Euros.
It was a disappointing overall performance from a quality England team, something we’ve all grown accustomed to in recent years, but Gordon is preferring to focus on the positives.
The 23-year-old will have another chance to impress on Tuesday when they face Belgium, who drew 0-0 with Ireland the day before, providing Gordon with a great opportunity to push his case for a spot in the June 23-man team.
Gordon wrote on Instagram, “A moment I’ve been dreaming about since I could kick a ball, an evening to remember.” “Next big game on Tuesday! π¦β¨.”
Shearer then reacted with: βππππβ
Gordon needs to finish the season strong with Newcastle
Gordon has already exceeded every other left-wing option for England this season, but now is not the time for the young guy to rest before of the European competition.
There’s obviously a position open for someone with Jack Grealish injured and out of form, and Raheem Sterling hasn’t been selected for an England squad in a long time, and Gordon has no reason not to be that option.
Newcastle don’t have much left to play for, but Gordon has 10 games left to cement his place in Southgate’s plans when he selects his 23-man group for the summer.
It is, after all, Gordon’s ultimate goal for the season, and it would cap off what has been a fantastic year for him individually while also providing him with a solid foundation to build on for the upcoming season.
