Sunderland’s rivals issue ‘urgent legal proceedings’ against Premier League and EFL

Leicester has initiated “urgent legal proceedings” against both the Premier League and the EFL. This action comes after the club was charged by the Premier League for a suspected breach of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) and subsequently placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL due to financial regulations.

The Premier League’s charge pertains to an alleged breach during the PSR assessment period ending 2022-23, while the EFL embargo relates to a March 1 submission forecasting the club’s financial results for 2023-24.

In their statement, Leicester emphasized their commitment to ensuring that any charges against them are fairly and properly determined according to the applicable rules and by the appropriate bodies. They expressed a preference for public proceedings but noted that confidentiality rules prohibit further comment at this stage.

The club reiterated their determination to uphold their rights and ambitions, particularly those earned through sustained sporting achievements. They disputed the EFL’s imposition of a registration embargo, citing it as restrictive and premature given the remaining reporting period.

While the Premier League declined to comment, an EFL spokesperson acknowledged Leicester’s statement but refrained from discussing the proceedings initiated by the club.

The nature of Leicester’s legal actions remains unclear. However, their statement on Thursday indicated a readiness to defend against any perceived unjust actions by football authorities, referencing a previous independent panel finding in their favor.

Notably, Leicester’s PSR charge will not follow the standard directions process due to the club’s relegation preceding its adoption. Both the Premier League and the EFL are reportedly keen to expedite the resolution of the case, although the initiation of legal proceedings by Leicester suggests a potentially prolonged process akin to Everton’s case.
