Newcastle United will be seeking for a new midfielder this summer, and one of their targets has confirmed that he will be available.
The Magpies were extensively connected with buying a midfielder during the January transfer window, but were unable to do so due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations. There were numerous rumours about potential targets, with Amadou Onana being the most well-known domestically.
Ederson from Atalanta was also prominently linked, and Newcastle sent scouts to look at him. The move did not go through, but Ederson is anticipated to be on Newcastle’s radar again at the end of the season.
That could also be the case for his Atalanta teammate, Teun Koopmeiners. In February, it was claimed in Italy that the Magpies were interested in the 26-year-old, and the Chronicle said he could be a target as well.
Now, the Netherlands international has spoken out about his future plans, expressing a strong desire to join a new club this summer.
Teun Koopmeiners wants to leave Atalanta this summer
Koopmeiners is now on international duty and has told De Telegraaf that he wants to leave Atalanta at the end of the season.
“I have indicated to Atalanta that I want to make a move this summer,” he told reporters.
“But there must be something very nice to exchange that for Atalanta.”My partner and I are having a wonderful time in Italy. However, I am willing to suffer the weather for some English clubs. I’m hoping there will be some wonderful options to consider. And then I hope Atalanta receives a decent sum for me, because I had a great time there.”
Koopmeiners opens the door for Premier League move as Newcastle watch on
Koopmeiners has stated unequivocally that he would be willing to participate in the Premier League despite the inclement weather conditions.
That could be excellent news for Newcastle, though the Dutchman’s contract with Atalanta runs until 2027, so a deal would not come cheap. According to reports, he might cost more than £43 million, making him one of the most expensive signings in Newcastle history.
He would add goals to the Newcastle midfield
This season, Koopmeiners has demonstrated his ability to be an excellent goal scorer. He has scored 12 goals in all competitions, with ten of them coming in Serie A.
In comparison, Newcastle United’s current highest scoring centre-midfielder is Sean Longstaff, who has six goals in all competitions this season.
That potential to score from midfield might be very appealing to Eddie Howe, as he wants to relieve pressure on his forwards.
But whether he becomes a top target for Newcastle remains to be seen. In reality, someone like his teammate Ederson is far more plausible at this time.
