Newcastle United is now in Dubai for warm-weather training during the international break.
Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is in Dubai to complete his recuperation from a thigh injury.
The Brazilian will be out until May after undergoing thigh surgery following an injury sustained in a 3-0 win against Sunderland in January. Following Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, Newcastle embarked on their annual warm-weather training trip to Dubai for the March international break.
Joelinton, like previous season, has also been to the United Arab Emirates to spend time with his partner, Thays Gondim. The pair posted an Instagram photo of themselves posing in front of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Newcastle’s non-international players have been given time off before beginning training in Dubai. Joelinton will be unable to participate in full exercises with his teammates while he recovers from his injury.
When asked about the vacation, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “As always, there will be a period of relaxation for the players after what has been a very busy period.” We’re dealing with some injuries and trying to get players ready for our upcoming game.
“There will be a period of effort. Of course, looking ahead to our next opponent [West Ham United], we’ll put in some good practice. We’ll do some fitness work and come back stronger for it.”
Joelinton’s future at Newcastle remains uncertain, as the club prioritises obtaining him a new long-term contract at St James’ Park. The 27-year-old’s current contract, signed when he first moved from Hoffenheim in 2019 for £40 million, will end next summer.
To avoid losing Joelinton on a free transfer next summer, Newcastle would contemplate selling the player if a new deal is not reached by the start of the transfer season in June.
However, it is understood that contract negotiations are progressing well, with Joelinton eager to extend his time at St James’ Park. The 27-year-old is seeking a new contract that would place him among the club’s greatest earners.
“We’re still trying from the club’s side,” head coach Eddie Howe stated of Joelinton’s contract issue. “We’re desperate to keep him, we know his qualities and what he brings but I don’t think there has been any major update or any major change to the situation.”
