Nottingham Forest argued that the Premier League’s economic and sustainability criteria make it impossible for ‘aspirant teams’ to climb the food chain.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been informed that the club may be forced to sell Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes. In January. Following the publication of the club’s full set of financial accounts, Darren Eales stated that each player at St James’ Park has a price.
The Magpies made a post-tax loss of £73.4 million in the most recent accounting period, with the losses mostly ascribed to ‘continuing investment in the football team’, according to a statement accompanying the numbers.
As the Premier League continues to crack down on those that violate their profit and sustainability regulations (PSRs), ‘aspirant’ teams such as Newcastle may be compelled to sell their top players.
Shay Given spoke on BBC Five Live Sport’s Monday Night Club about Newcastle’s situation following Nottingham Forest’s six-point deduction, which was confirmed on Monday. The 47-year-old said that the Magpies would be forced to sell Isak and Guimaraes in order to comply with PSRs and prevent a repeat of the Forest issue, much alone compete with Manchester City.
“How do you catch up?” inquired Given. “Now the talk is Guimaraes or maybe an Isak you have to sell for big money, so now you are weakening yourself to take a risk and sign two or three players who may not be as good as Guimaraes or Isak to try and catch up with the likes of Man City.”
A Nottingham Forest representative addressed the situation in a formal statement following the four-point deduction on Monday. They stated: “The commission’s decision creates concerns for all wannabe clubs.
