Newcastle United’s ambitions of signing a title-winning midfielder this summer have suffered a setback after being linked with him early this season.
Eddie Howe’s team is looking to strengthen their midfield with a more defensive-minded player, and it was revealed in January that they could be in line to sign Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich.
However, journalist Florian Plettenberg has now stated that the ‘world class’ midfielder will only be interested in joining for five clubs, with Newcastle not among them.
Premier league rivals set to beat Newcastle this summer
Kimmich could have altered Newcastle’s team this summer by bringing his title-winning knowledge to the North East and teaching this set of players how to win.
Instead, Newcastle appears to be vulnerable to a number of Premier League opponents, with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal all interested in signing the German midfielder.
It was always going to be a long shot, and even more so if Newcastle didn’t have Champions League football to offer him, which is now out of reach given their league standing.
But those are the types of players who will truly make a difference moving ahead; Newcastle only needs to find the ones who are prepared to invest in this long-term effort and elevate the team.
Plettenberg stated on social media that FC Bayern are willing to sell Kimmich this summer if a good offer is received. Furthermore, JK is not ruling out a relocation and is willing to negotiate with potential purchasers! There are still no solid discussions about a new contract beyond 2025.
“Only five top clubs are interested in signing Kimmich: Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona.” Some of the aforementioned five clubs have already contacted Kimmich!
He is not interested in moving to Manchester United, Chelsea, or Paris.”
Newcastle will have to offload a midfielder
It’s been a trying season for Howe, who has only had three midfielders available at times, one of whom is only 17, and Newcastle may be forced to sell one of their choices this summer.
The return of Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson has given the squad a significant boost, although Joelinton, who has been out with a long-term injury, and Sandro Tonali, who has been banned since October, have yet to return.
If Newcastle genuinely wants to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer, they’ll have eight possibilities, all of whom believe they’re talented enough to start for the club.
This might be a major issue for Howe, who does not want to upset anyone in the dressing room and risk losing that great attitude, so he will have to be brutal in determining who he can afford to lose this summer.
