Southampton now face departure for key star, Russell Martin must do one thing

Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong is out of contract at the end of the season, and the club risks losing him for nothing.
Southampton might lose the Scotland international as a free agent in late June.

Armstrong, 31, has yet to sign a new agreement with the Championship promotion contenders.

The Saints must solve his issue as quickly as possible and retain him for an extended period of time, regardless of the league they play in.

Russell Martin and Southampton need to keep midfielder

Armstrong is an important player for Southampton who adds quality to their squad.

He still has plenty of time on his side, and his expertise is valuable to have on their roster, especially with their abundance of young talent.
The Saints signed him in 2018, and he has been an excellent servant to the team. He has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals and assisting six times.

Prior to his departure to Hampshire, the ex-Dundee United player spent four years with Celtic, winning the Scottish Premiership in each season.

Opinion: Southampton need to agree a new deal with 2018 signings, contract up this summer.

Armstrong is a trustworthy player for Russell Martin, and letting him go this summer, possibly to a league competitor, would be a foolish decision.

The Inverness-born player’s immediate goal will be to help the Saints return to the Premier League after being relegated last season. He has stuck by them this season, but if they do not advance, his future is uncertain.

Martin’s men return to action on Good Friday at home against Middlesbrough, looking to cut the gap on Leeds United, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town. They then face off against the latter on Easter Monday at Portman Road.

In the meantime, the international break allows them to relax and recover.
It also gives Armstrong, goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, and forward Che Adams the option to resolve their contract situations.
