The latest news from St James Park as Newcastle United prepares for the summer transfer window.
Newcastle United will back the Premier League’s efforts to establish stricter financial laws, according to a football finance specialist.
The announcement of recent commercial deals with sportswear giants Adidas, kit sponsors Sela, and sleeve sponsors Noon has reportedly increased the Magpies’ coffers by around £250 million as they continue to battle financial regulations that have hampered some of their efforts to add to Eddie Howe’s squad.
However, football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes the Premier League’s new financial rules, which are set to be implemented to bring them in line with UEFA regulations put in place in recent years, may have some positive implications for the St James Park hierarchy, describing them as ‘the least worst option’.
He told Football Insider, “I believe ambitious and aspirational clubs like Newcastle United and Aston Villa will see the new financial rules as an opportunity.” It is an opportunity for the team to gain revenue, which will allow them to increase their transfer budget. Newcastle has inked arrangements with Adidas, Sela, and Noon, as well as strengthened its commercial partnerships in the Middle East.
“They are well aware that for every extra £100 they make, they may add an extra £70 to their spending bucket – or £85 if they are not in Uefa competition. So I believe Newcastle will have seen these proposed improvements as the least bad choice. Newcastle will want to play in Europe on a regular basis and will thus have to comply with UEFA financial restrictions – so they might as well copy them in the Premier League to deal with only one set of laws.
Magpies discover demands for French talent
Newcastle United and Chelsea have reportedly determined how much they will have to pay Lyon to let Rayan Cherki go during the summer transfer window.
According to Spanish publication Fichajes, the 20-year-old offensive midfielder is ‘the centre of attention’ from numerous clubs throughout Europe after establishing himself as one of European football’s most fascinating talents by impressing in Ligue 1 throughout the season.
Cherki has three goals and five assists in 29 games in all competitions for Lyon, as well as seven goals in his previous eight appearances for France Under-21s, which has piqued the interest of several clubs. Newcastle and Chelsea have reportedly sent recruitment personnel to check on the child in recent months. However, according to the article, Lyon has set an asking price of “around €25 million (£21.3 million)” in order to make the most of one of their finest assets.
