Charlton Athletic defender set to leave club, Nathan Jones must do one thing

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones worked with Thierry Small at Southampton before bringing him to The Valley earlier this winter.
Charlton Athletic signed the left-back on a short-term contract in January that runs until the end of the season.

Small, 19, has since impressed for the League One club, helping them pull away from relegation danger in recent weeks.

The Addicks have the option to prolong his stay for another 12 months and must renew his contract this summer.

Nathan Jones should keep hold of January recruit

Charlton sees no reason not to keep Small. At the age of 19, he has plenty of potential to grow and improve in the future.

If he continues to impress, the London club may be able to sell him for a fee in the future.

The England youth international parted ways with Southampton by mutual consent prior to joining the Addicks, and the transfer might pave the way for his future success.

He has joined a team where he is guaranteed regular first-team action right away, but with the Saints, his chances of breaking into their starting lineup were minimal due to the options available in his position.

Small played for West Brom and Everton before joining St Mary’s, however he only appeared once for the Hampshire club.

He earned experience on loan at Port Vale and St Mirren to enhance his development, and those stints will benefit him.

Charlton took a chance on him when they swooped to get him, but he has proven to be a valuable asset, and Nathan Jones needs to sanction the extension of his contract.

Jones’ team triumphed 3-2 at home to Carlisle United last time out and will play travel to Fleetwood Town this weekend.
