Breaking: Ravens in Agreement to Sign Former Washington Commanders Quarterback

According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, former Washington Commanders quarterback Josh Johnson re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Johnson has also played for the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, among others. Johnson was with the Ravens for the 2023 season but did not see any play.

The seasoned quarterback began his career in the league in 2008. He’s been in and out of the league, but the 37-year-old has another chance with the Ravens.

Johnson played four games with the Commandeers in 2018, completing 52 of 91 pass attempts for 590 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has not played more than four games in a season since 2011.

He most recently played for the 49ers, when he threw for 10 yards on two tries. He played one game with the Browns but did not attempt a pass.

The longtime backup quarterback understands his role and has accepted it, intending to play until he is 40 years old. According to Kyle Newman of the Denver Post, Johnson stated in 2022 that he intends to play until at least 40 years old.

“I want to play at least until I’m 40,” Johnson stated. “I’m taking it one year at a time and will re-evaluate after 40. But, in the meanwhile, I’m trying to keep it running for as long as possible.”

Johnson Understands His Role

While Johnson has traditionally been a backup, the former fifth-round choice in the 2008 NFL Draft recognizes his responsibilities. That is why the Washington Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and the eight other NFL clubs he has played for have given him a chance.

Johnson has been a professional, whether on the practice squad or the official roster. There’s a reason why more than ten teams have given him the opportunity to join their locker room.

Johnson knew this during his stint with the Denver Broncos, as he stated the following regarding his role.

“It’s all about understanding that we all follow in Russ’ lead, and my job is to be a sounding board for him and to make sure I’m reiterating the same things in the offense, going out there and executing the offense as similarly as possible while also playing my own game,” Johnson said in a statement. “I’m locked into the moment right now.”

Commanders Could use Someone Like Johnson

As the Washington Commanders prepare to draft a quarterback with the second overall choice, they could benefit from Johnson’s experience in the league. After signing Marcus Mariota as a backup, it’s conceivable that someone similar to Johnson will join the practice squad.

However, bringing in a quarterback who understands the NFL’s highs and lows can assist a rookie quarterback. The Baltimore Ravens are keeping him around because of his ability to be a good teammate, not his skill.

Sometimes in professional sports, athletes who can create a positive atmosphere to the locker room are more valuable than those who can produce on the field.

According to Johnson, there are careers for these types of players.

The former Commanders quarterback will get another shot to achieve his ambition of playing until he is 40 years old.
