Newcastle United now ready to sanction permanent exit for player

Southampton are hoping to sign Ryan Fraser on a permanent basis, with parent club Newcastle United willing to let him go for a ‘nominal amount’, according to TEAMtalk.
Southampton signed winger Fraser on loan from Newcastle United this summer. He has slipped far down the pecking order at the Magpies and was not in Eddie Howe’s plans for the 2023/24 season.

With the Saints, the Scot has demonstrated that he is still a valuable figure. He’s scored eight goals and provided three assists in 32 games across all competitions, frequently making an impact off the bench.

Given his position in the Newcastle hierarchy, the idea of a permanent move to St. Mary’s appears plausible.

TEAMtalk has alleged that, with Southampton interested in keeping the 30-year-old, his parent club is willing to sanction a move. They’re eager to get Fraser’s salaries off the books with a year left on his contract and are likely to let him depart for a little amount during the summer transfer window.

A feasible move

This seems like a transaction that can be completed this summer. Fraser is not in Howe’s future plans, and following a successful period at Southampton, it’s not surprising that they want to keep him after his loan term expires.

While not a guaranteed starter, Fraser has made a solid impact in 32 appearances across all competitions. He’s an experienced presence on either flank, and regardless of whatever division the Saints play in next season, he might be a valuable addition.

Fraser has played a role in their bid for promotion from the Championship, and while he is now sidelined, he is expected to return later this month.

That will be a welcome lift for Russell Martin and his team as they attempt to cut the gap on the top two again. The Saints are now fourth in the Championship table, six points behind Leeds United in second place, but they have a game in hand on all teams above them.
