‘Big name’- Sunderland now told to make this “ambitious” managerial appointment

Sunderland are looking for a new permanent manager after parting ways with Michael Beale last month.

Mike Dodds has been named interim manager of the squad until the end of the season, but his permanent appointment appears more improbable.

The Black Cats have lost all four games under Dodds since he took over the team in February.

Dodds impressed as temporary head coach in December, winning two of his three games before Beale took over.

However, names such as Will Still, Steve Cooper, and Paul Heckingbottom have been connected to the permanent head coach role at the Stadium of Light.

Will Still “the one everyone wants” at Sunderland

Sunderland fan pundit Jack Austwicke believes Still is the best option the club can seriously look to hire.

“Immediately, it springs to mind Will Still’s the only name on everyone’s lips,” Austwicke went on to say.

“The one everyone wants, the big name, the one we were linked to, and the most ambitious one is Will Still.

“He stated he wanted to move down to the Championship, and what better place to come than the Championship’s biggest club, in my opinion.

“Why not just go for it?” We’ll have had four months by the time we appoint him to really attempt to persuade him about this initiative, and they need to get it right.”

Sunderland league position

During Dodds’ tenure as temporary head coach, the squad has fallen far behind its opponents for a top-six finish.

Sunderland are now 12th in the Championship table, 11 points from a play-off spot with only nine games remaining.
The club has lost its last five games in a row, and the bottom three are now just nine points behind.

The Black Cats’ next game will be at home against QPR on March 16.

Will Still is the obvious standout candidate for Sunderland

Reims boss Will Still now drops biggest hint yet on future amid Sunderland links

Still’s performance in Ligue 1 has earned him a lot of plaudits, propelling Reims into European contention.

If he is prepared to drop down to the Championship, he would be a really exciting and ambitious signing for Sunderland.

The 31-year-old is a talented, up-and-coming coach with the potential to rise to the top of the game, which appears to be consistent with the Black Cats’ plan under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who has focused on signing young talent with high ceilings.

Still allegedly spoke with the Sunderland hierarchy when they were seeking for a replacement for Mowbray, but for whatever reason, he stayed in Ligue 1 and the Championship club went with Beale.

They may now rue that decision, and it is unclear whether they will be able to get Still in the summer, but he appears to be the most apparent candidate.
