Newcastle United were defeated 3-2 by Chelsea, causing Eddie Howe to experience another difficult night on the road. Liverpool great Jamie Carragher says Newcastle United lacks the “intensity” that gained Champions League football last season.
The Magpies have slipped to 10th place in the Premier League following a drop-off from 2022–23. They now face a battle to secure any type of European football next year, which could have an impact on their spending capacity.
Newcastle’s poor performance against Chelsea means they have now surrendered the joint most away goals in the Premier League this season. Eddie Howe’s top-four charge was built on defensive steadiness, but that has come undone in recent times, particularly on the road.
Dan Burn, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes were all injured before the game, adding insult to injury for Newcastle before of a crucial FA Cup showdown with Manchester City. In the Premier League, a home double-header against West Ham United and Everton might determine Newcastle’s season.
Speaking after the Chelsea defeat, former Liverpool defender Carragher acknowledged he “adored” watching Newcastle last year, drawing parallels with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but lambasted their current drop in form. The Sky Sports pundit stated, “I loved Newcastle last season. It was their zeal that reminded me of Jurgen Klopp’s first days at Liverpool, when people were sprinting everywhere.
“It appears that the team is nearing the conclusion of the season. If I hadn’t known this team, I would have found the way they defended unacceptable. Let us not forget that this is an average Chelsea team.
