Tiago Pinto has expressed interest in becoming Newcastle United’s next sporting director following Dan Ashworth’s departure.
During an exclusive interview with the i’s Mark Douglas, the 39-year-old revealed his desire to meet with Newcastle management, describing us as a “big club” with “huge potential” following the introduction of Saudi money.
Pinto was Benfica’s director of football from 2017 to 2020 before joining Jose Mourinho at Roma, where he resigned this month after his fellow countryman and close buddy was fired by the Serie A club.
After telling iNews that the Premier League is his “dream” destination, he had this to say regarding the open role at St James’ Park:
“If a big club like Newcastle asks to speak with you, of course you’re interested,” he stated.
“I’m very familiar with the club’s history because Sir Bobby Robson was a well-known figure in Portugal, and we associated him with Newcastle.” That desire drove me to pursue the club.
“The new ownership has done an excellent job; with a clever strategy, they have risen from relegation to the Champions League, demonstrating Newcastle’s enormous potential.
“I don’t know if the interest is true or not but who would say no to a project like that?”
The Mail’s Craig Hope disclosed last week that Pinto was one of four candidates being considered by Newcastle, which has hired world-renowned consultants Odgers Berndtson to identify a new sporting director.
