Premier League rule set to impact Newcastle United for Chelsea clash

Newcastle United will be missing Lewis Hall for Monday’s game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Lewis Hall, a Newcastle United defender, will miss Monday’s Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (8pm kick-off).

The 19-year-old left-back has made few appearances for Newcastle this season and will not even make the bench against Chelsea according to Premier League rules. Hall is currently on loan from Chelsea, and despite Newcastle’s obligation to buy the player for £28 million at the end of the season, he is unable to play against his parent club.

Interestingly, Hall was named to the bench for Newcastle’s previous Carabao Cup match against Chelsea in December. The left-back was an unused replacement as the Magpies lost on penalties in the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw.

Cup competitions follow different rules than the Premier League. Loan players may compete against their parent clubs in cup tournaments if granted permission.

However, the rule prohibiting loan players from playing against their parent clubs in the Premier League stemmed from a transfer decision made by Newcastle in 2004. At the time, the Magpies leased out attacker Lomana LuaLua to Premier League rivals Portsmouth.

LuaLua played for Pompey against his parent club and scored a contentious late equaliser. This triggered a change in legislation for the Football Association and Premier League to prevent such situations in the future.

LuaLua signed permanently for Portsmouth at the end of the season.
