Jon Scheyer gives ‘shock’ injury update on Duke player

Caleb Foster’s absence from Duke basketball is likely to last at least another week, if not longer.

Looking to rebound from Saturday night’s 84-79 home loss to archrival UNC and enter the NCAA Tournament on a high note with his second ACC Tournament title in as many years as head coach, Jon Scheyer appears to have to prepare his Duke basketball team to play without freshman guard Caleb Foster once more.

Foster received a right lower leg injury in the second half of the Blue Devils’ loss to Wake Forest on February 24. The former five-star recruit, who started against the Demon Deacons and the two previous games, has been wearing a special walking boot and using a scooter to move around ever since.

Following Duke’s defeat to the Tar Heels on Senior Night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Scheyer, 36, provided an update on the 19-year-old Foster’s status.

Although Scheyer did not totally rule out the prospect of the North Carolina native playing in Washington, D.C., he concluded his remarks by effectively ruling him out of the ACC Tournament:

“I would say it’s a long shot; at best, he’ll be ready to play next week. I think it’s quite unlikely. He is doing everything he can to make progress, but he is not close. He is not. I’d have loved to have him out there tonight and next week. But our team must continue to improve.

And hopefully, we’ll be able to get him back.

“But it’s not gonna be for this week.”
