‘I know’: 25-year-old is interested in signing for Newcastle- Journalist

Newcastle United have received a summer boost as one of their possible targets, a Premier League defender, is said to be open to joining the club.

Newcastle have been keeping an eye on Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, whose contract expires this summer and may be a good value for the Magpies.

Journalist Ben Jacobs told GiveMeSport that Kelly would be ‘open to relocating’ to Newcastle if they offered him a contract in the summer.

Newcastle handed boost in search of defender

Eddie Howe is very interested in boosting to his defensive ranks for next season and would prefer to bring in Premier League proven individuals who can go in right away.

That is exactly what Kelly would bring to the team, having made 45 appearances in the division since joining the Cherries at the start of the 2019 season when they suffered relegation.

Kelly would give depth not just to Newcastle’s centre-backs, of whom only four are deemed first-team level, but he can also play left-back.

Being a free agent is also extremely useful to Newcastle, who must adhere to very strict budgetary constraints that severely hampered them in January, when they couldn’t afford to make even one first-team signing despite all of the injuries.

Newcastle need as much money as possible this summer

Howe has suffered this season due to a lack of depth, with injuries and Champions League matches having a significant impact on their success.

Their form suffered greatly in December and January, when injuries were at their worst and Howe was forced to play the same starting 11 in every game, causing a lot of weariness in the team.

The head coach will be aiming to acquire some top-tier reinforcements in the summer to avoid a repeat of this predicament and to give them a boost in their quest to return to Europe’s elite ranks.

Kelly’s lack of a transfer fee would be excellent for the Magpies, as it would save them from having to find a replacement for players like Sven Botman and Fabian Schar, allowing them to invest more money in other areas, such as right-wing, which is a higher priority.
