The New York Yankees may not sign one of their alleged free agent targets.
New York has been seeking for ways to enhance its starting rotation and has been linked to two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell several times.
Although a trade is considered unlikely, both parties have expressed interest. New York still has work to do, but it appears that Snell may not join the club.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, the Los Angeles Angels are the current favorites to sign Snell.
“The Los Angeles Angels continue to be the favorite to land free-agent starter Blake Snell, who’s willing to sign a short-term contract with opt-outs,” Nightengale said in a statement. “Angels owner Arte Moreno has yet to sign off on a big free-agent purchase after being burned in past years.”
Signing Snell would benefit the Yankees greatly, but such a move is unlikely at this time. Snell is one of baseball’s top pitchers, but he would cost the Yankees a lot owing to the high tax implications.
Los Angeles has a lot of money to spend and a significant need in the starting rotation after losing two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani. With Opening Day just around the corner, it’s surprising that Snell is still available in free agency, but he appears to be close to signing. While this is true, it does not appear that he will land in New York.
