Sunderland suffered another setback on Saturday, as Southampton won 4-2 at St Mary’s.
Mike Dodds believes Sunderland has had two major judgments go against them this week, but he isn’t going to linger on either as he attempts to stop the club’s losing streak.
The Black Cats believed they should have had a good chance to equalize in stoppage time against Leicester City on Tuesday night, when Dan Ballard appeared to be fouled by Hamza Choudhury as he broke through on goal.
There was then controversy at St Mary’s when Adam Armstrong scored from the penalty spot, despite appearing to kick the ball with his standing leg before converting.
Sunderland believed the goal should have been ruled out, keeping the score at 1-0 for the hosts despite their dominance of the game up to that point.
“Yeah, the whole refereeing thing is a difficult one for me because I understand that it’s a really difficult job for them and they’re humans, so they’re going to make mistakes,” he added.
“We had two penalties the other night that we didn’t get, and the goal [Armstrong’s penalty] should have been chalked off, but I’m not going to come out and condemn; that’s not my style. My instinct is to focus solely on Sunderland and how we can improve; those decisions sometimes work in your favor and sometimes do not.
In the last two games, two major rulings went against us. It is what it is; I cannot alter it right now, but I can return to the training pitch on Monday and attempt to improve.”
Sunderland meet QPR in a key game next Saturday.
