Newcastle United have yet to make a move for a new sporting director since Dan Ashworth departed the club, but one potential candidate appears to be out of the running.
A number of people have been associated with the role of director at Newcastle, including former Liverpool player Michael Edwards, but a transfer never materialised.
However, Fabrizio Romano now claims that Edwards is on the verge of rejoining Liverpool, despite previous allegations that he was not interested in returning to a football club.
Newcastle miss out on Ashworth replacement
Newcastle were struck a major setback when Ashworth announced that he would be leaving the club for a position at Manchester United less than two years after joining from Brighton.
It was hoped that Ashworth would stay with Newcastle for the long term to help them transition into this new period and grow them into a premier European club before going on to his next project, but that was not to be.
Newcastle were well protected, however, thanks to Amanda Staveley’s talks, as they are now asking £20 million from Manchester United to complete the transfer, otherwise he will be on gardening leave for another 20 months.
In their quest for a new director, Newcastle hoped that Edwards would be looking for a return to a football club after creating his own company, but that appeared to be a long shot.
Now, Edwards appears to be returning to his previous club and Newcastle’s Premier League rival in a significant move for them, with Jurgen Klopp departing at the end of the season.
On X, Romano stated, “Liverpool are close to receiving the final green light for Michael Edwards’ return to the club; it is imminent.” Final details must be signed off before it is sealed and announced—we’re getting there. The #LFC final effort appears to have been the correct one to complete the task.”
Newcastle looking elsewhere for new director
Newcastle are said to be looking for a long list of replacements for Ashworth, with names such as Paul Mitchell, Richard Hughes, and Tiago Pinto being mentioned in recent weeks.
There will undoubtedly be many more, but Newcastle will want to be thorough and take their time before pursuing one to ensure that he is the best candidate for the job, and they will want to prevent a similar problem from occurring again.
Whoever they hire will have one of the most exciting jobs in football, and they will undoubtedly have a lot of work to do in order to get the team back into the Champions League next season.
