Jon Scheyer reveals injury setback to Blue Devils

Caleb Foster will not be available when the Blue Devils host the UNC basketball team at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Caleb Foster hasn’t played since suffering a right lower leg injury in the second half of Duke’s notorious court-stormed loss to Wake Forest two weeks ago. The five-star freshman will be sidelined once more when Jon Scheyer’s team meets its UNC basketball rivals at 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday (ESPN).

“He can’t go [on Saturday night],” Scheyer told the media about Foster’s status on Thursday as his No. 9 Blue Devils (24-6, 15-4 ACC) try to tie the season series with UNC and send the No. 7 Tar Heels (24-6, 16-3) back to Chapel Hill with only a share of the conference’s regular-season championship.

“[He] is not there yet. And I wish I could give you a more full response than “he can’t go [against UNC], and he can’t even practice yet.”

Foster played 19 minutes off the bench in Duke’s 93-84 loss over UNC on February 3, fouling out after scoring five points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

2023-24 Duke Basketball Player Preview: Caleb Foster

Although he is not one of the Blue Devils’ top weapons — he is the squad’s sixth-highest scorer at 7.7 points per game — he has made more than 40% of his 3-point attempts this season and has been an effective fill-in starter for a group that has suffered from a number of injuries.

It’s also worth mentioning that Caleb Foster led Duke to a primetime victory over Michigan State in November, scoring 18 points and going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

In other words, his absence reduces the Tar Heels’ potential X factor in Cameron Indoor Stadium. However, the Blue Devils are on a three-game winning streak without him.
