Chelsea vs Newcastle United: Premier League match officials have been announced for the encounter at Stamford Bridge.
The Premier League match officials for Newcastle United’s encounter against Chelsea on Monday (8pm kick-off) have been confirmed.
John Brooks will referee the match at Stamford Bridge. Brooks’ last match as a referee for Newcastle was a 3-1 victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park in January.
In contrast to Brooks’ previous encounter at St James’ Park versus Liverpool, that one went off very smoothly. Liverpool overcame Newcastle 2-1 in August. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off for a tackle on Alexander Isak after Anthony Gordon put Newcastle ahead.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Jurgen Klopp’s team produced a late comeback, with Darwin Nunez scoring twice to seal a 2-1 victory.
Regarding Brooks’ decision to send Van Dijk off, Klopp stated, “There is no active contact from Virgil van Dijk.” He was simply going for the ball and made contact on his way there.
“For this contact, getting three games, oh my God, unbelievable.”
Van Dijk’s reaction to Brooks’ red card resulted in a further one-match suspension and a £100,000 fine after admitting to acting improperly and using abusive and disrespectful language towards the match officials.
Brooks will be aided by Lee Betts and Neil Davies, with Craig Pawson serving as the fourth official. Jarred Gillett will be on VAR duty for the match, with Adrian Holmes assisting.
Gillett refereed Newcastle’s previous Carabao Cup match against Chelsea, which, curiously, did not have VAR. The Australian referee let Chelsea player Moises Caicedo off with a yellow card for an early challenge on Anthony Gordon, which Magpies head coach Eddie Howe called ‘awful’ after the game.
Newcastle lost on penalties after Mykhailo Mudryk’s stoppage-time equalizer.
The Magpies come into the game after defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 the previous Saturday. Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League rankings, four points behind Newcastle with a game in hand.
Newcastle’s previous two visits to Stamford Bridge drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, but they have not won a game away from Chelsea since Papiss Cisse’s historic brace in a 2-0 victory in 2012.
