Kieran Trippier has ‘every chance’ of making Newcastle United’s trip to Chelsea on Monday night (8pm kick-off), despite being declared out for the game.
Trippier suffered a calf injury during Newcastle’s 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers and is expected to be out until the end of the month. Trippier will not be part in United’s Premier League and FA Cup away games against Chelsea and Manchester City next weekend, according to head coach Eddie Howe.
“Kieran is not too bad, it’s a minor injury but the scan has shown enough to keep him out for the next two games,” the coach stated. “We hope he’ll be back after the international break but there’s no guarantee.”
Tino Livramento will replace Trippier in the side. The 21-year-old replaced Trippier against Wolves and scored his first goal for the club.
During Trippier’s last injury absence for Newcastle two years ago, he continued to travel with the team home and away to show his support. And Howe believes the 33-year-old will do the same again.
“There’s every chance he’ll come to the next two games,” he remarked. “He’s very keen to stay with the group and not become detached and that highlights his leadership qualities.”
However, due to his injury, the right-back will miss out on a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad, which will be announced next Thursday. “He won’t be, as far as I know, going away with England,” he said.
Trippier has been a fixture in England’s team since his international debut in 2017, but he will miss the forthcoming friendly against Brazil and Belgium. Trippier was also forced to withdraw from the previous England squad in November owing to personal issues.
Here is Newcastle United’s current injury list and estimated comeback dates, as per Eddie Howe’s pre-match reports…
1. Matt Targett (hamstring)
Matt Targett has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in the first few minutes of Newcastle’s 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United. The left-back had hamstring surgery in November and has now resumed full training. Expected return: Chelsea (A) – 11/03
2. Lewis Hall – ineligible
Lewis Hall is ineligible to feature against his parent club Chelsea on Monday. Expected return: Manchester City (A) – 16/03
3. Kieran Trippier (calf)
Trippier was forced off during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Wolves due to a calf issue. Trippier is out for a few weeks due to a scan result. Expected return: West Ham (H) – 30/03
4. Nick Pope (shoulder)
Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder against Manchester United in December and had surgery. Eddie Howe has stated that the goalie is still some weeks away. Expected return: Everton (H) – 03/04
5. Callum Wilson (chest)
Wilson played 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest but finished the game with his arm in a makeshift sling. It has subsequently been reported that the striker sustained a pectoral injury in his chest and underwent surgery. Expected return: Burnley (A) – 04/05
6. Joelinton (thigh)
Joelinton suffered a thigh injury during Newcastle’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland. He was allowed to play briefly before being removed. Eddie Howe has ruled the Brazilian out for at least six weeks, but surgery is expected to keep the midfielder out until the end of the season. Expected return date: May 2024
7. Sandro Tonali (suspended)
Tonali received a 10-month suspension from football after violating Italian betting regulations. This suspension will keep the midfielder out of action for the remainder of the season, the European Championship next summer, and the first few weeks of the following season. The results of an FA investigation are still waiting. Expected return: 27/08/24
