52-year-old makes 9-word social media post after links to Sunderland

Roy Keane has been connected with the vacant Sunderland post once more, and he has responded on social media with a tongue-in-cheek message.

The Black Cats are looking for a new head coach after Michael Beale was fired earlier this season, with interim manager Mike Dodds taking over until the summer.
Keane, a former Sunderland and Ipswich Town manager, was extensively connected with a return to Wearside until Alex Neil was appointed manager for the 2021-22 season after talks between the club and the Manchester United star fell through.

However, now that the position is again open, speculation about Keane and Sunderland has resurfaced, with some bookies providing short odds on the one-time Celtic player becoming the club’s next permanent head coach.

Fans and bookies, as well as experts and journalists, have all contributed to speculation about Keane’s return. Nick Barnes of BBC Radio Newcastle recently commented on the Total Sport program, saying, “Some names have been tossed into the hat. We know about Alex Neil. He is currently on an incredible Sunderland charm attack.

“Roy Keane has expressed a desire to return, but I doubt it will be under this ownership arrangement. “If the ownership was right, I could see him coming, but I don’t think he would come with the current ownership.

“According to reports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Scott Parker have also expressed interest in the position. There are other names in the frame, but we’ll have to wait and see. If they wanted Will Still in December/January, they’re probably still seeking for a coach like him. I believe a lot will rely on what happens with Kyril Louis-Dreyfusa throughout the summer, as well as if he remains here.

“Obviously, it looks like he is going to be but who knows in football and whether there would be more money available to the head coach and whether they are going to be a bit more elastic on the model in terms of signing experienced players.”

Keane took to Instagram, posting a photo of himself and his old Manchester United teammate Solskjaer with the caption: “DM us if you’re looking to hire a manager.”

Keane recently spoke on The Overlap and provided a lengthy explanation to managers making transfer decisions. He stated, “There is this assumption that management should make the decisions, but it is difficult. I’ve been a manager and bought players – some good ones, but some that make me wonder, “What was I thinking?”

“Of course, you have your team and the chief of operations, but it will eventually come down to the manager. But I’ve also had it when I’ve been at a club when the owner has pushed for a player; I’ve been hesitant, but the player who has come in hasn’t been particularly good.”
