The Buffalo Bills dismissed running back Nyheim Hines as part of a series of moves to find financial relief. They were $40 million over the cap and needed to make moves to position themselves for 2024.
The Buffalo Bills have released running back Nyheim Hines. They said earlier this week that they will release the 27-year-old as part of a series of cost-cutting measures after exceeding the cap by $40 million.
By releasing Hines, the Bills will save approximately $4.6 million. In total, the decision to release Hines, Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse, Siran Neal, and Deonte Harty will save the Bills $25.96 million.
This is only the latest setback in Hines’ career. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts and played four seasons with the team until being moved to Buffalo in 2022. However, things have not gone well for him since then.
Last summer, Hines was engaged in a jet ski accident in North Carolina, colliding with another jet skier. This caused him to break several ligaments in his knee and miss the entire year.
Following the collision, Hines engaged lawyer Brad Sohn to investigate the matter. Sohn alleged that the collision cost Hines a future multimillion-dollar deal due to the injuries.
“According to North Carolina authorities, Nyheim Hines was struck by a recklessly operating jet-skier travelling at potentially 40mph and in violation of North Carolina’s minimum watercraft education training requirements,” according to Sohn’s statement at the time. “Authorities identified the careless operator as the cause of the accident.
Nyheim, who has a boating license and was probably going approximately 10 mph, was not cited and has asked my office to hold the responsible parties accountable for terminating his season and perhaps costing him millions.”
After keeping silent for a while, Hines revealed how difficult his recovery was following the crash. “Honestly, there were times I just wanted to scream and cry,” Hines told The Athletic.
“It was just rehab man, but it was hard as hell.”
Hines claimed he was hit on his right side while returning from fueling the jet ski. Later, when he attempted to run, his left knee ached. He discovered he had torn both his ACL and LCL in that knee.
While improving, the running back began to appreciate the little things about being a professional football player. “I never took football for granted, but after this, I understand what it means to me.” “I would do anything to be back right now,” he admitted.
Hines, who is now a free agent, is thought to be prepared for training camp and has resumed training, but has yet to be given permission to practice. The Bills have also hinted at a reunion with Hines, but it remains uncertain whether they will be able to reach an agreement that works for both parties.
For the time being, Hines will have to continue recuperating and training for the 2024 season on his own, as the Bills have decided to release him to address their salary limit issues.
