Nathan Jones makes his feelings clear after win v Cheltenham Town

Nathan Jones was pleased with his team’s performance in their third consecutive away game on Tuesday evening, when two late goals guided them to a 3-1 victory over Cheltenham Town.

“I thought we were magnificent,” he told Charlton Television. “This is a real brutal place to come – how they play, they put you under pressure, you’ve got to win first, you’ve got to win seconds, you’ve got to handle so much intensity and I thought we were brilliant.”

“I would have accepted any win tonight. But an away win against these, given how well they’re playing, demonstrates that we’re in a strong position.”

The Addicks dominated the game, but it could have ended very differently when the Robins leveled with 20 minutes remaining. Jones was happy with his team’s response.

“We once again demonstrated character and excellence. “After leading and not being under too much pressure, when we conceded, we handled it, made changes, and then took the game away from them,” he explained.

The manager heaped praise on his three scorers: “Daniel Kanu was a threat all night, and he kept going,” he stated. “I’m pleased for Tyreeq [Bakinson] because we left Tyreeq out on the weekend and he’s come back in and scored.”

When it came to Alfie May, he said: “I thought he was doing them a favour, right up until he tapped that one in the net, because he had a lot of chances to score tonight.”

“We used him because he’s accustomed to scoring on this pitch… So I am happy for him when he scored.”

Charlton’s next home game is against Carlisle United, and Jones is looking forward to returning to the Valley.

“The games are thick and fast,” he explained. “I’ve played seven games while I’ve been here, five of them were away. We’ve been on the road, just preparing. “The schedule is just crazy.”

Not only have Charlton’s players travelled over the country, but so have their followers. Jones was quick to congratulate them: “The fans were wonderful again today, and being here after everything that’s been going on [is great]. So it’s an excellent night for the football club.”
