Newcastle United open talks to complete free transfer for 25-year-old

Newcastle United are in talks with Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, who is available for free transfer at the conclusion of the season. Kelly was recruited by Eddie Howe five years ago.

The 25-year-old’s contract expires at the conclusion of the season, and his arrival would free up finances elsewhere for the Magpies. In January, Newcastle’s balance sheet had little wiggle room, and they were unable to increase their ranks despite a decimated squad.

CEO Darren Eales recently discussed the necessity to comply with FFP/PSR standards, making Kelly a logical choice. Eddie Howe signed the centre-back five years ago, and he played a key role in Bournemouth’s promotion to the Premier League in 2022.
Kelly has been injured in recent weeks, last appearing in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle more than a fortnight ago. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola used him as left-back, highlighting his versatility, which also appeals to United.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have met with Kelly’s representatives to discuss a summer move. AC Milan and teams in Germany have also been mentioned as potential destinations for the former England Under-21 international.

Jamaal Lascelles, the club’s captain, could be affected by Kelly’s presence. His contract will also end in the summer, and Turkish giants Besiktas have expressed interest.

Howe spoke at the conclusion of last year about his desire to keep the 30-year-old on Tyneside. As it stands, Lascelles is the only first-team backup at centre-back, with Dan Burn continuing to be selected on the left.

Sven Botman and Fabian Schar are Newcastle’s unquestionable first-choice choices, with on-field captain Kieran Trippier playing right back. Lascelles has been at St James’ Park for nearly a decade and is still the club’s off-field captain, despite minimal playing action in recent seasons.
