Club confirms Newcastle United linked Dan Ashworth replacement will leave club

Bournemouth have confirmed that Richard Hughes, who has been linked with Newcastle United, will depart the club at the conclusion of the season.

The former Cherries player was appointed as the club’s technical director in 2016, however he will depart his position at the Vitality Stadium. The announcement comes amid speculation about Newcastle following Dan Ashworth’s departure.

Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition, Manchester United has targeted Ashworth. He has been placed on gardening leave after informing Newcastle that he wishes to finalize a transfer to Old Trafford, and the Magpies are asking a substantial compensation money.

Hughes worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe at Bournemouth but was one of the few staff members who did not follow him to St James’ Park. Hughes reflected on his stint at the club in a statement released via the club’s website.

“Working for AFC Bournemouth has always been a source of great joy and pride for me,” he added. “From serving the club as a player to later becoming a football leader, I consider every moment I’ve spent here a blessing.

“As technical director, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most talented and devoted folks the game has to offer. This role has been hard, enjoyable, and fulfilling for the past ten years.

“The journey we’ve gone on as a club is nothing short of amazing. Our current situation, both on and off the field, gives me hope for the future.”

Hughes will quit his position at the Vitality Stadium at the end of this season. The reason for his leaving is not specified in the club’s announcement. The technical director has also been linked with a transfer to Liverpool.
