Newcastle United’s summer dreams have been dealt another blow after it was revealed that one of their erstwhile targets has no interest in signing with them.
The Magpies originally expressed interest in Juventus winger Federico Chiesa last summer, when they were trying to improve their right-wing position, but nothing came of it.
According to Tuttosport, Chiesa rejected overtures from Newcastle and Aston Villa because he did not consider them to be elite European teams.
Newcastle will not sign talented winger this summer
Despite his extensive injury history, Chiesa remains a very skilled player, as evidenced by his performance at the Euro 2020 competition, where he impressed while lifting the cup with Italy.
His stint at Juventus has not been as successful, as he was recently booed off the pitch by his own fans after a 3-2 victory over Frosinone.
This generated suspicions that he might leave, and just last week it was revealed that he might be sold for as cheap as £30 million, giving Newcastle hope that they could get the star player.
However, this fresh revelation has dashed Newcastle’s hopes for the attacker, who is looking to join an elite club such as Chelsea or Manchester United, despite the fact that the Geordies are in and around that European conversation.
Newcastle must turn their attention elsewhere
Eddie Howe has built a squad at Newcastle in just over two years that is willing to fight for each other and for the fans, demonstrating a true resilience and passion to achieve with this club.
It is that dogged mindset that has won them significant games when their player quality did not match their opponents’, and Howe highly values it.
While they recognize his skill, pursuing Chiesa would be fruitless since they know he would not fight as hard for a club he does not believe is up to his expectations.
With Yankuba Minteh returning from his loan with Feyenoord, it appears that it would be more useful to give him game experience at the right-wing position and save the funds to reinvest elsewhere.
