Sela, Newcastle United’s principal shirt sponsor, successfully staged a competition featuring some of the world’s best promising young footballers.
Newcastle United’s primary sponsor, Sela, hosted the first La Liga FC Futures event in Saudi Arabia over the weekend.
Twelve Under-14 teams competed in 11-a-side matches at Riyadh’s Mahd Academy. The teams comprised academy teams from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Osasuna, Real Betis, Cadiz, Valencia, and Villarreal in Spain, as well as AS Roma, Marseille, Benfica, and the Mahd Academy’s host club.
Sela issued a statement on its social media channels prior to the tournament, saying, “Sela is proud to organize the first La Liga FC Futures tournament in Saudi Arabia with 12 teams for under 14 years.”This competition shows to be an excellent showcase for the world’s most promising young players.”
Villarreal won the event, defeating Sevilla 2-1 in the final.
Sela has secured numerous important football collaborations in the last year. Last summer, the Saudi Arabian events company signed a multi-year sponsorship contract with Newcastle United worth £25 million per season.
They have also formed a strategic agreement with Newcastle’s new kit manufacturer, Adidas. Newcastle hosted and won the Sela Cup pre-season event at St James’ Park last summer.
Sela is also ‘powered’ the upcoming St James’ STACK fan zone, which is now being built outside of St James’ Park.
The company’s participation in the La Liga FC Futures tournament is the latest football collaboration to be formed.
Sela are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which owns 80% of Newcastle United following the club’s acquisition in October 2021.
