One of Miami Dolphins’ defensive standouts is slated to enter free agency in the coming days.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano reported that the Dolphins are unlikely to utilize the franchise tag on Christian Wilkins. The defensive tackle is scheduled to enter free agency.
Wilkins, 28, has been a standout on the field since the Dolphins selected him 13th overall in 2019. Wilkins recorded a career-high 9 sacks, 23 quarterback hits, and 65 tackles last season. He recorded 98 tackles the previous season.
Wilkins has appeared in every game over the last three seasons, missing only two in the previous five.
Development out of Indy: Several league sources expect #Dolphins’ Christian Wilkins to avoid franchise tag. Miami source says keeping options open, but teams bracing for star DT to hit free agency.

The market for premier defensive linemen like Wilkins is projected to be in the $20-$25 million range every year, with Wilkins’ most likely season salary being about $23 million.
Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and Jalen Ramsey are already among the Dolphins’ high-paid players. The team has to make room for Tua Tagovailoa’s expected contract extension. Miami has already cutting Xavien Howard, and it appears that they are reluctantly deciding not to keep Wilkins.
