Alan Shearer and Bruno Guimaraes react to news about £12m Newcastle player

Kieran Trippier was voted North East player of the year by local journalists yesterday night, following his efforts for Newcastle United in 2023.

The defender was outstanding in a year that saw the Magpies reach the Carabao Cup final and visit Wembley Stadium for the first time in over 20 years, as well as qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2004.

Trippier uploaded an Instagram photo of himself receiving the medal, prompting replies from teammates Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, as well as Newcastle veteran Alan Shearer.

Trippier deserves award for Newcastle displays

Although some would claim that he had his worst moments in a Newcastle shirt at the conclusion of 2023, his overall performances were the driving force behind the team’s victory in the first place.

The now-33-year-old brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a team that includes several players who have never played in Europe before, making him critical to the club’s Champions League chances.

Not only was he an excellent defensive addition when they purchased him from Atletico Madrid in 2022, but he has also helped to revolutionize the attack, with double-digit assists in the Premier League this season.

It’s impossible to imagine where Newcastle would be without Trippier’s efforts, which not only elevated the group but also pushed his colleagues to play better.

Trippier commented on Instagram: “Delighted to win the 2023 player of the year award. (Trophy almost bigger than myself)

Trippier still has a lot to give

There were some concerns that Newcastle had already seen the best of Trippier in 2023, and that things would only get worse from here as he entered the latter stages of his career.

However, in recent weeks, the former Tottenham player has appeared more like his typical self, eager to get the squad back into Europe for next season.

The England international was an unfortunate casualty in the weekend’s triumph against Wolves, being pulled off in the second half, but he remains optimistic as awaits results from a calf scan.

Trippier still has a significant role to play in the club’s future and will be seeking to return the team to the elite level next season.
