Newcastle United suspensions: Bruno Guimaraes is getting close to avoiding a Premier League ban.
Bruno Guimaraes, a Newcastle United midfielder, continues to walk a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers (3pm kick-off).
The Brazilian has received nine yellow cards in the Premier League this season and is one booking away from a two-match ban. Guimaraes has avoided a booking in Newcastle’s previous five league games after receiving his tenth yellow card in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City in January.
Guimaraes has maintained his discipline in recent weeks, despite the danger of a penalty. To avoid punishment, he must avoid bookings in Newcastle’s next six Premier League games.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remarked, “I think he’s handled [the threat of suspension] really well so far and has been his usual self.”
“He hasn’t appeared to be mindful of it while playing, which I don’t believe is possible. He played with discipline and did an excellent job for the team.”
A yellow card against Wolves this weekend would keep Guimaraes out of the upcoming Premier League games against Chelsea and West Ham United.
Anthony Gordon is now facing a two-game suspension after receiving his eighth card of the season with a stoppage-time foul in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa in January.
The Magpies duo were already suspended for one match earlier this season after receiving five yellow cards in Newcastle’s opening 19 Premier League games. Kieran Trippier was also given such a suspension.
Newcastle has already played 26 Premier League games, and the suspension threshold has been raised to 10 yellow cards, with a 32-match cut-off. As a result, any player who receives 10 yellow cards between now and a club’s 32nd match of the Premier League season will be suspended for two matches.
In addition to Guimaraes’ one booking, Gordon will have to avoid two more in Newcastle’s remaining six league fixtures.
Trippier, Sean Longstaff, and Joelinton have all been booked five times.
Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar have four bookings, while Dan Burn has three. Sandro Tonali, Callum Wilson, and Sven Botman have been booked twice, while Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Matt Ritchie, Matt Targett, Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy, and Martin Dubravka have all received one Premier League booking.
