Newcastle United midfielder reacts to MLS transfer following ‘sad’ departure

Matty Longstaff has left Newcastle United to join the MLS.

Sean Longstaff, Newcastle United’s midfielder, has responded to his brother’s move to Toronto FC of the MLS Eastern Conference. The Magpies dismissed Matty Longstaff, three years younger than his brother Sean, last summer.

The 23-year-old suffered a devastating knee injury while on loan at Colchester United on Boxing Day 2022 and has not played competitively since. He returned to Newcastle to rehab his injuries last winter, ahead of his exit from the club this summer.

Taking to X, Sean wrote: ‘Good luck over in the @MLS @mattylobby48! Easy on the maple syrup!’

Longstaff had been working with the Canadian side for around a fortnight before the club announced his signing on Thursday. Sean Longstaff told BBC Radio Newcastle that his brother’s departure from his boyhood club in the summer was “obviously quite sad.” When the news broke, it was upsetting, but football is a game, and he’ll get there someday.

“He’s a top-tier player, and people saw that when he did play. We’ve been playing football together on the same squad since we were nine years old, so we’ve had a good run. I continue to communicate with him on a regular basis, and he and I will both support one other.

“The club has been fantastic with him. They’ve done all they can. They’re going to get him totally fit so he can get back out there and kick again. I’m quite grateful for that, and I know he is as well. “It was inevitable.”
