The League One strugglers have been hit yet more by a points deduction.
Reading FC are expected to get their second points deduction of the season due to continued HMRC financial concerns, as the club struggles for a second consecutive relegation.
The Berkshire club is presently 16th in the third tier of football, four points ahead of 20th-place Charlton Athletic and five points clear of the drop zone. Reading had previously been deducted four points this season and had been working their way up the table under Ruben Selles in recent weeks.
According to the Reading Chronicle, another two-point deduction is on the way, dropping the team to 19th place, just two points ahead of the Addicks. The news will be a comfort for Nathan Jones and his team, who also have a game in hand over the Royals, but it is nothing to celebrate for the sport, as Berkshire fans continue to demand that owner Dai Yongge sell the club.
If Charlton defeats high-flying Derby County on the road tonight, they would move above Reading and into 19th place in a table with the new points punishment – which has still to be confirmed by the EFL.
According to the site, the Reading squad is aware of the news as they prepare for their next League One match against Carlisle United on Saturday. In 2024, both London League One clubs, Leyton Orient and Charlton Athletic, traveled to the Select Car Leasing Stadium, with the hosts drawing 1-1 and defeating Charlton 2-0.
The EFL, which has requested that Yongge sell or fund the club, stated that there are ‘interested parties’ in completing a Reading purchase. Last year, Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group and Formula One team backer William Storey were both associated with bids, although the news has since died down.
