‘I like what they’ve tried to do’: Pundit makes surprise call on Burnley

Pundit Chris Sutton has urged Burnley to “hold their nerve” and support their long-term strategy.

The Clarets have had a dreadful season in the Premier League since their spectacular Championship title win last season.
After 26 games, Vincent Kompany’s side has only won three.
Burnley are almost certainly destined for relegation unless something extraordinary happens.

Despite the grim future, it is known that Kompany’s job at the club is secure, and the hierarchy is instead focused on the much-discussed three-year plan.

With a season’s worth of experience behind them, Burnley should be better prepared to deal with the rigours of the Premier League when they return.

Sutton was told that Burnley should be doing better given Kompany’s and Bellamy’s experience in the dugout.

“Not in a coaching sense,” Sutton responded on BBC Final Score.

“I honestly appreciate what Burnley has attempted to do, and if they keep the squad together next season – and they will be relegated, they need to win one in two, and they’ve only won three all season, they need at least six victories, which is unlikely – but I like what they’ve tried to do.

“There’s a long-term approach, and I believe the club just needs to hold its nerve.

“This has been a challenging season. They began the season aiming to play a broad brand of football, but they’ve adjusted that little recently.”
