United are heading to Lancashire aiming to secure a spot in the quarter-finals, facing off against John Eustace’s Championship team. The only obstacle in their path to the last eight of the competition is Eustace’s side.
Australian referee Gillett has been designated for the match at Ewood Park as Newcastle faces a team currently positioned 16th in the second tier.
Gillett, aged 37, has officiated two matches involving Eddie Howe’s team this season, both in domestic cup competitions. He was in charge of Newcastle’s penalty shoot-out loss to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals in December, where he issued yellow cards to Bruno Guimarães and Callum Wilson. Additionally, he refereed United’s 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Fulham last month, with Fabian Schär being the sole player cautioned.
Transitioning from the Australian top flight to the EFL in 2019, Gillett became a Premier League referee in 2021. His inaugural Premier League match was a 1-1 draw between Watford and Newcastle. He attained FIFA-listed referee status in 2023 and has officiated matches in the Europa Conference League this season.
