Newcastle United handed huge Champions League boost after unexpected European result

The Premier League’s hopes of obtaining an additional Champions League spot for the 2024/25 season have been given a big boost following Thursday night’s events.

Newcastle United’s chances of playing Champions League football in the 2024/25 season have been significantly boosted by an unexpected result during Thursday night’s Europa League and Europa Conference League matches.

The teams who will compete in the final 16 of both events were announced last night, and the draw for the following knockout stages took place on Friday morning. While the Magpies do not have any European games to look forward to, they have every reason to be interested in how the UEFA competitions unfold between now and the conclusion of the season.

Even though the Europa League and Europa Conference League drawings have no bearing on the Champions League this season, how each team performs will determine which country receives one of the two additional berths in next season’s new Champions League format.

These two berths will go to the leagues that have performed well in all three European competitions. The extra berths will be determined by points awarded for victories and draws. This creates a competition amongst leagues.

Italy and Germany are now in these two spots, but England’s chances of overtaking the Bundesliga have improved significantly thanks to Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise. After drawing 2-2 with German team Eintracht Frankfurt in the first game, they defeated Frankfurt 2-1 at Deutsche Bank Park Friday night.

The Premier League is closer to Germany than Italy in the coefficient structure, therefore Frankfurt’s departure benefits them. Teams receive additional points for reaching specific stages, however the Conference League does not award them until the semi-finals.
