Bruno Guimaraes has avoided suspension for Newcastle United’s match against Arsenal on Saturday, but he is still facing a two-match ban.
Arsenal are likely to pursue Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this Saturday (8pm kick-off) as he serves a two-match Premier League suspension.
The Brazilian has received nine yellow cards in the Premier League this season and is one booking away from a two-match ban. Guimaraes has avoided a booking in Newcastle’s previous four league games after receiving his tenth yellow card in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City last month.
Guimaraes was also booked in the reverse encounter against Arsenal at St James’ Park, which The Magpies won 1-0. However, some claimed the 26-year-old was fortunate to remain on the field after his arm collided with the back of Jorginho’s head as he sprinted past the Arsenal midfielder.
However, Guimaraes has maintained his discipline in recent matches despite the prospect of a ban.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remarked, “I think he’s handled [the threat of suspension] really well so far and has been his usual self.”
“He hasn’t appeared to be mindful of it while playing, which I don’t believe is possible. He played with discipline and did an excellent job for the team.”
Anthony Gordon is facing the possibility of a two-game suspension after receiving his eighth yellow card of the season due to a foul in stoppage time during Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa last month. Gordon, aged 23, clinched the winning goal in Newcastle’s previous encounter with Arsenal but was also cautioned in that match.
Earlier in the season, both Gordon and his teammate Kieran Trippier served one-match suspensions after accumulating five yellow cards in the first 19 Premier League games for Newcastle. However, with Newcastle having played 25 Premier League matches now, the suspension threshold has increased to 10 yellow cards, with a cutoff point at 32 matches. This means that any player who receives 10 yellow cards up to and including the club’s 32nd Premier League match will be subjected to a two-match ban.
Consequently, Guimaraes must avoid receiving another booking in each of Newcastle’s next seven league matches to evade a two-game suspension, while Gordon needs to steer clear of two more bookings during the same period. Guimaraes’ significance to Newcastle is highlighted by the team’s failure to secure a victory in the seven matches the midfielder has missed since joining the club over two years ago.
In addition to Gordon and Guimaraes, several other Newcastle players are on the brink of suspension due to accumulated yellow cards. Trippier, Sean Longstaff, and Joelinton have been booked five times each, while Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Dan Burn have received four, and Sandro Tonali, Callum Wilson, and Sven Botman have been booked twice.
Furthermore, Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Matt Ritchie, Matt Targett, Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Jacob Murphy, and Martin Dubravka all have one Premier League booking apiece.
