Three players set to be out v Portsmouth as Jones reveals special plans for Charlton squad

Nathan Jones, Charlton’s head coach, has stated that he plans to reduce the number of his squad this summer.

This season, the Addicks have employed 46 players across all competitions, with 24 of them making their debut.

Jones was asked in his pre-Portsmouth press conference today about those players who fans expect to be less engaged in recent games.

“We pick a side to win a game and you won’t just pick the same 11 week in and week out – and find out a lot about the players, what I can demand from them and how I can play with certain players,” the Welshman went on to say.

“It’s a big squad—it’s too big. We will reduce it down in the following months and go forward. What we want to do is streamline and build a highly competitive squad. At the moment, it is little too enormous in terms of numbers.

“One of the first things I’ll do is learn about everyone, and then strategically, we’ll put together a team that can perform and play.

“Some people are recovering from injuries and cannot play as much. I choose a team based on as much information as I can. I don’t rotate or tinker; if I can play with 11 guys, make the same substitutions, and win every game, that’s wonderful. But that does not happen.

January signing Kayne Ramsay is unlikely to recover quickly from the hamstring injury he suffered in the 1-1 draw against Lincoln City.

Charlton Athletic had to pay Harrogate Town a 'significant' fee for Kayne Ramsay

“Kayne is going to be a little longer,” Jones remarked. “It is a hamstring tendon issue that might occur at any time, so I would not place a timeline on it. It will hold him out for the foreseeable future, in terms of our next three or four games.

“Tyreeq (Bakinson) was ill (for Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Bolton), so we cleared him out – regardless of whether he was fully recovered or not – because it may happen to others, so we took precautions.

“Panutche (Camara) took a knock in training on Thursday.” He traveled with us and played some of the game, but starting him was probably a medical risk.

“They are in better positions than they were a week ago and everyone is gathering that bit of momentum we’re demanding from them in different ways.”
