Latest: 27-year-old now predicted to return to Newcastle United

Newcastle United faces a crucial decision regarding their striker position in the upcoming summer transfer window, as it has become a pressing issue. Despite possessing quality forwards like Callum Wilson, injuries have plagued their ability to maintain consistency on the pitch.

Wilson, who is set to be out of contract at St James’ Park in 2025, has once again found himself sidelined, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the season.

David James, when asked about the potential re-signing of Ivan Toney from Brentford, supported the idea, highlighting the unfortunate injury woes faced by Wilson. The former Premier League goalkeeper believes Toney, who previously spent three years with Newcastle before departing in 2018, would seamlessly integrate into Eddie Howe’s side.

Reports from HITC Football suggest that several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester United, and Chelsea, besides Newcastle, are keen on acquiring Toney’s services this summer, indicating a high likelihood of his departure from Brentford for a significant transfer fee.

Should Newcastle possess the financial means to secure his signature, David James believes it could be a mutually beneficial move, especially considering Howe’s tactical preferences aligning with Toney’s style of play.

Ivan Toney return to Newcastle United?

“Given Callum Wilson’s injury record this season, and I hope he can get himself fit to be in the conversation to go to Euro 2024 in the summer, but if there’s an ongoing issue for him there, then I think there’s a natural fit for Ivan Toney at Newcastle when you consider the way that Eddie Howe likes his side to play,” he added.

“If I had to choose where Ivan should go in the summer, then I would say Arsenal or Newcastle United, but it all depends on whether these teams are looking to win titles or just have a top goalscorer.”

Big call from Ivan Toney

Toney’s next action just cannot go wrong since it will wreck his career just when he is reaching the pinnacle of his abilities.

Because of his age, the England international has no time to make mistakes or relax, and he must compete for a spot near the top very immediately.

From the player’s perspective, if a non-European club approaches him, he should simply decline because he does not have the time to commit to a slow, long-term project.

Toney is concerned with the present, and Arsenal is among the interested parties because they have a good chance of becoming English champions in May.
