The Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal on Saturday night (kick-off 8pm GMT) will be refereed by Paul Tierney.
Eddie Howe’s team heads to the capital with the goal of securing another win against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, having already triumphed 1-0 at St. James’ Park in November. This upcoming match marks Tierney’s first time overseeing a game involving Newcastle this season.
Tierney, originally from Wigan, was the referee for three of Newcastle’s matches in the 2022/23 season. Among these was their 2-1 victory at Nottingham Forest, where he awarded a late penalty, converted by Alexander Isak, and issued six yellow cards, one to Dan Burn.
A FIFA-listed referee since 2018, Tierney also managed Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton, where he sent off Bruno GuimarĂ£es in a 2-1 win, and their 4-0 win against Aston Villa, booking two players, including Joelinton.
In the current season, Tierney has officiated 20 games, including the 2023 Emirates FA Cup final, where he issued a total of 74 yellow cards and three red cards.
