Breaking news: 5 players now set to leave Newcastle United

The upcoming summer transfer window promises significant activity for Newcastle United, with numerous comings and goings expected following a subdued January period.

A crucial aspect to consider is the status of players whose contracts are nearing expiration, with six Magpies set to become free agents as of July 1st, unless changes occur.

Among them are Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Mark Gillespie, and Loris Karius, although uncertainty lingers over whether our club captain will prolong his tenure on Tyneside for another year.

Players like Dummett and Ritchie have been pivotal off the pitch under Eddie Howe’s management, valued for the experience they bring. However, with their limited on-field appearances this season totaling less than 300 minutes each, it’s impractical to carry too many such players in our 25-man squad. Ritchie’s recent goal was a memorable moment, but it’s likely to be his final contribution in the team’s colors.

There’s a possibility Gillespie could secure a new contract to fulfill a ‘homegrown’ quota, yet Karius seems inclined to depart, potentially to be closer to his partner in Italy.

Lascelles presents a dilemma. While there’s speculation about an option to extend his contract, akin to Emil Krafth’s situation, the question remains whether he’ll accept a backup role at this stage of his career.
