Pundit is shocked as Sunderland is now linked with 44-year-old as new manager

Darren Bent is “shocked” that former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper has struggled to find a new job despite being linked with Sunderland.

The Black Cats are looking for a new manager after dismissing Michael Beale on Monday. Cooper, who left the City Ground in December and was replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, has been linked with taking over at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking about the Sunderland position on talkSPORT on Tuesday, Bent said: “It’s a big deal. That’s a huge job. I am surprised by Steve Cooper’s potential, as well as the fact that he has yet to find work.

“I did think that Steve Cooper would maybe get a Premier League job because I think he is that good.”
Cooper was previously connected with taking over for Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace, but the Eagles have hired Oliver Glasner.

Sunderland has named Mike Dodds as interim head coach till the conclusion of the season. Their sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, stated, “We are disappointed that Michael is leaving Sunderland AFC. Our objective is to improve, but that has not been visible; as a result, we accept full responsibility and believe that moving decisively is in the best interests of the club.

“This has been a challenging few months for Michael, and he leaves with our best wishes for the future. Our attention is now on the players and assisting Mike Dodds in the remaining games to ensure the best possible league finish. We will provide future updates to our supporters if critical changes occur.”
